The University was founded in 1962 and gained its current name and status in 1981. The Faculty of Fine Arts comprises departments of dance, drama, musicology and vocal and instrumental music, Rabindra Sangeet and Tagore music. The music department specialises in North Indian classical music. The musicology department offers programs at graduate level only. Languages of instruction are Bengali and English.
