The Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya (University of Music and Fine Arts) was founded in 1956 and has affiliated colleges throughout India. It teaches the classical traditional music and dance styles of both North India (Hindustani) and South India (Karnatak), together with visual arts, theatre and folk arts. Facilities include more than 40,000 books, a sizeable collection of tapes and CDs of Indian music, video slides of Indian painters, a collection of the works of folk and tribal artists of different regions, and a small gallery of classical and folk instruments. There is a well-equipped recording studio. The university publishes rare works of Indian artists and musicians. There are departments of adult and continuing education offering short courses in musical/artistic areas. Languages of instruction are Hindi and English.
