Institution Notes:

The University was founded in 1857. The Department of Indian Music was inaugurated in 1932 and is a performance-oriented institution. It offers programs in South Indian Classical music (Karnataka), specialising in voice performance. Other studies include history and styles of Indian musics, world music, music notation, teaching methodology. There is a sound archive of Indian music and a rich collection of books, journals and manuscripts, with some rare and ancient treatises in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages. The Department of Indian Music organises an annual international music festival. Queen Mary’s College, an autonomous Arts and Science College affiliated with the University, offers a range of music programs. Languages of instruction are Tamil and English.
