Institution Notes:

A government-approved college, founded in 1932, with an evening college founded in 1943 having the aim of fostering Tamil music and its allied arts and conducting research into Tamil music. The Tamil Isai Sangam is the only institution in India offering a full program in Tamil music and follows a government syllabus. Its diplomas are awarded by the government. It offered full-time courses for the first time in 1995, including a teacher training course. Foreign students are accepted with classes in teaching Tamil dance (Bharata Natyam), Tamil music (vocal, veena, mirudangam, violin, nagaswaram, thavul), Tamil literature, history and culture. An annual 12- to 13-day Tamil music festival is held in December and the College holds annual competitions in performance. There is a museum of musical instruments and a fully-equipped library with rare books and magazines.
