Institution Notes:

The Academy, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture, was founded in 1952 for the furtherance of the performing arts of India, a task in which it co-operates with counterparts in the States and voluntary organisations all over the country. It is the premier institution for the promotion, preservation and dissemination of the performing arts - Hindustani and Karnatak music, dance, drama, puppetry - in India. Through sponsorship, research and dissemination it seeks an enhanced public appreciation of music, dance and drama together with a quickened exchange of ideas and techniques for the common gain of Indian performing arts. The Akademi’s Fellowship and Awards are the highest national honour conferred every year to artists for excellence and contribution in the field of performing arts. Over the years the Akademi has build up a large collection of documented material in the form of films, audio and video tapes and photographs as well as an audio-visual library of tapes and discs. There is a museum of musical instruments, costumes, masks and puppets. The journal ‘Sangeet Natak’ is published quarterly.
