Institution Notes:

The Musicology Institute (Zenetudomanyi Intézet) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is not a teaching school. It is a research centre, an examining body and publisher of scholarly works. There are departments of folk music research and early music history. The Institute incorporates the Bartók Archives (with manuscripts of his essays as well as articles, correspondence, books, periodicals and printed music), the Dohnányi archives, the Hungarian Folk Music Archives, the archives for 20th and 21st century Hungarian music and vast collections of melodic transcriptions, some Hungarian and some eastern and central European melodies. There are large collections of recordings and films, including the Arabic collection, Turkish collections and Roumanian collections. The Music History Museum in Buda Castle holds a number of traditional instruments of the region. Various qualifications in musicology may be awarded for research undertaken at the Institute.
