The Museum of Popular Instruments – Research Centre for Ethnomusicology - is not a teaching institution. Established around 1840, it consists of a collection of about 1200 Greek traditional musical instruments dating from the 18th century to the present day. The aim is to collect, preserve, study and disseminate Greek folk and Byzantine musical traditions and to create an ethnomusicology and audio-visual archive. The Research Centre organises lectures, educational programs, seminars and recitals of Greek traditional music. It offers lessons on traditional instruments. The Museum is housed in the Lassanis Mansion, built in 1842.
