The Centre, founded in 1979 and operated under the guidance of Ianis Xenakis, conducts research into sound sources available for the composition of contemporary works. The aim is to research and develop the composition of electroacoustic music in Greece. The Centre has carried out research into the Greek musical heritage (ancient Greek, Byzantine, folk and modern), and has organised concerts and presentations both in Greece and abroad. Its involvement with music education has resulted in the issue of textbooks for the use of secondary school music teachers. The Centre has held seminars and conferences on acoustics and sound sources for composition. There is a rich archive of recordings and scores of traditional and contemporary Greek music. No degrees or diplomas are awarded.
