Diploma (=Bachelor). Four years. Studies focus on Greek popular and traditional music and the technology of manufacturing traditional instruments. A six-month paid work placement is required. Studies in performance of traditional musics and dances of Greece and neighbouring countries, Western styles, world music, Byzantine chant, acoustics, theory, music history and analysis, organology, pedagogy, sound engineering. Graduates are qualified to teach Greek traditional music and dance in schools and other organisations.
The Institute was founded in 1994. The Department of Traditional Music aims promote the originality and variety of traditional musics in Greece and some of the surrounding nations (including Turkey, the Balkans, Italy, the Arab world, north Africa). There are branches in Ioannina, Preveza and Igoumenitsa. The Greek Music Archive aims to gradually collect all the published audio recordings of Greek traditional music; this material is complemented by accompanying data, such as booklets, music transcriptions, photographs, DVDs and the like.
