Institution Notes:

This University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (sometimes called Academy of Music and Performing Arts), was founded in 1830 and plays an important part in the artistic life of the city. It organises over 750 musical events each year. There is an opera school incorporating studies of production, lighting design, make-up, stage direction, drama and musical theatre, in co-operation with the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding. An independent department within the Hochschule is the Ballet Academy, adding a further dimension to the possibilities for music theatre performance. A program in Alexander technique is available. In 2008 the former Richard Strauss Konservatory in Munich was incorporated into the Hochschule. There is close co-operation with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. The University houses an electronic music studio, an Institute of Musicology, an Institute of Music Education, an Academy for New Music and an Early Music Studio. Minimum age limit for entry is 16, and maximum for entry is 25. There is a junior program offering music performance and theory tuition to gifted school students from the age of ten years. The Hochschule has the use of the Prinzregenten Theatre for rehearsals and performances. The city of Munich has five professional orchestras (with visits by world-famous conductors), numerous chamber ensembles and opera and music theatre organisations, thus giving students wonderful opportunities to hear music performances of the best quality. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
