Details:

Meisterprüfung. Three years. Apprenticeships for the making of violins, bows, plucked instruments, woodwind and brass instruments. Studies in the history and theory of instrument making and playing, history of music, theory, drawing, German, trade and law, arithmetic and book-keeping. Apprentices take private music lessons and attend ensemble rehearsals. Pre-requisites: Completed elementary education, musicality, good eyesight, skill in handicraft.


Institution Notes:

The State Vocational School for Musical Instrument Making, Mittenwald was founded in 1858, offering courses for apprentices leading to the Journeyman’s examination (Gesellenprüfung). Following this, a three-year period of employment is taken, then a further one-year advanced course leads to the Master’s examination (Meisterprüfung). No tuition fees are charged, with all costs for school trips, books and tools being at the expense of the students.
