The University itself was founded in 1477, and as such, is one of the oldest universities in Germany. Students wishing to enrol in a music course need to enrol in two places, both the University and the Hochschule. There is a small collection of Thai instruments and a number of recordings of tribal music of the region. There is co-operation with the Peter Cornelius Conservatorium in Mainz and a number of other institutions. The school organises an annual summer school for singers ('Singing Summer').
