Institution Notes:

Established in 1843 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, this was the first conservatorium to be founded in Germany. Some of the world’s most noted musicians and educators have been associated with the Hochschule, including George Szell, Kurt Masur, Hermann Levi, Charles Münch, Wilhelm Backhaus, Arthur Nikisch, Ignaz Moscheles, Isaac Albeniz, Edvard Grieg, Leos Janacek and Max Reger. Through the Hochschule's Mendelssohn Orchestral Academy there is a close relationship with the Gewandhaus Orchestra whereby advanced students who pass an audition can stand in for members of the orchestra. A similar relationship with the Leipzig Opera enables gifted students to secure minor or moderate roles. The University organises up to three opera productions each year. There is collaboration with the Bosehaus/Bach Museum and the instrument Museum of the University of Leipzig. The ‘Hans Otto’ theatre school has been integrated into the Hochschule. There is a Church Music Institute (Kirchenmusikalischen Institut) founded in 1919 as well as Departments of Early Music (founded in 1992) and Dramaturgy. Facilities include a well-equipped sound recording studio and a new concert hall. The University owns eleven harpsichords, three early pianos, an organ, a clavichord, a consort of baroque string instruments and a renaissance recorder consort. Studies at the Hochschule are free of charge apart from an application fee. A music program is organised for young children. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
