The University of Cologne was founded in 1388 and as such is the oldest university in Germany as it exists today. It gained its current name and status in 1919 and the Institute of Musicology was established in 1921. It houses a collection of traditional instruments mainly from east Asia and Africa. There is an Institute of Folkloric Music (founded in 1964) that carries out research into German folk music and dance, forms, sources, functions and traditions as well as types of current music of the people. It holds a large collection of books, song books, hymn books, recordings and magazines. There is a well-equipped sound studio. The University cooperates closely with the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne.
