The Hamburg Staatsoper was founded in 1789. Georg Friedrich Händel was opera violinist and harpsichordist at one stage. The Opera Studio, founded in 1994, works in collaboration with the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. The program is open for audition to highly gifted young singers who have completed their college or university studies. No examination is taken and no diploma is awarded, but students are provided with continuous, personal specialist advice as well as with group-based and one-to-one-based supervision. Students in the program have experience in performances at the opera house alongside the professional singers and receive a monthly grant plus a fee for participating in Hamburg State Opera performances. They participate in master classes and study small and medium operatic roles and are expected to attend rehearsals and performances and to participate in their own programs and opera studio productions. Upper age limit for applicants is 30 years for women and 32 years for men.
