Institution Notes:

This University was founded in 1950. There are four main departments: • Department I - performance programs (classical, jazz/popular), composition, theory, choral and orchestral conducting, Protestant church music. • Department II - Theatre Academy, with studies in vocal music, opera, music theatre and drama directing, drama. • Department III - academic and pedagogy programs, musicology, culture and media management, music therapy. An on-line music history project has been instituted focusing on the trends and events of the post-war music history of the divided Germany (1945-1990) during the Cold War. Facilities include fine performing spaces, a concert hall, theatre, opera studios as well as state-of-the-art recording and electronic music studios. The University has organised a system of short practice workshops for electronic music known as Soundworks City Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg (Klangwerkstadt) for interested students and members of the public to get an insight into the basics and the possibilities of electronic music creation. There are programs for children and young people, with an International Music Program particularly directed at new arrivals in the country. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
