The Conservatorium was founded in 1908. It consists of three divisions, the professional academy, the music school (with programs in classical and jazz performance, ensembles, children’s choir, programs for the very young) and the continuing education division with adult courses in such areas as appreciation of new music, choral singing, early music, African drumming, theory and ear training, chamber music, recorder ensembles, parent-child classes for the very young, beginning performers. A new Jazz & Pop Academy has been opened for interested students. Preceding the professional course for full-time students is an artistic foundation course to prepare students for music study at higher levels. The Conservatorium organises programs of group lessons and a JeKi program (one instrument per child) that work with schools to provide instrumental lessons in primary schools and music centres in various locations around the city of Hamburg. The Conservatorium is an All-Steinway School.
