The Conservatorium was founded in 1908. It consists of three divisions, the professional academy, the music school (with programs in classical and jazz performance, ensembles, children’s choir, programs for the very young) and the continuing education division with adult courses in such areas as appreciation of new music, choral singing, early music, African drumming, theory and ear training, chamber music, recorder ensembles, parent-child classes for the very young, beginning performers. A new Jazz & Pop Academy has recently been opened for interested students. Preceding the professional course for full-time students is an artistic foundation course to prepare students for music study at higher levels. The Conservatorium organises programs of group lessons and a JeKi program (one instrument per child) that work with schools to provide instrumental lessons in primary schools and music centres in various locations around the city of Hamburg. The Conservatorium is an All-Steinway school.
MUSIC FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN. Initial music training in Germany may be given either by private teachers or at one of the growing numbers of music schools. Music is a curriculum subject at the elementary school level and may be taken as a specialist subject through till the end of secondary schooling. PROFESSIONAL MUSIC SCHOOLS. Entry to most professional music schools is at minimum age 17. Higher music training is available at a number of different types of institutions: • College of Music (Musikhochschule), providing the most advanced training and catering for the potential professional musician. They are regarded as equivalent to university level. Each has an attached special school of music which prepares specially gifted children for future study at a college of music. There is an association of Colleges of Music throughout Germany, called the Rektorenkonferenz der Musikhochschulen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. • Conservatorium (Konservatorium) and Music Academy (Akademie), providing training to both professionals and amateurs. The program is similar to that of the musikhochschulen, but does not normally include training for school music teachers or full-time church musicians. • Teacher Training College (Pädagogische Hochschule). Training for teachers of music at elementary and/or secondary modern school (Realschule) levels. Many former teacher training colleges have been incorporated into Comprehensive Colleges or Universities. • Comprehensive College (Gesamthochschule). Only two of these exist (at Hessen and Nordrhein-Westfalen). They grew out of teacher training colleges, and link together different institutions of higher learning, such as teacher training colleges, music colleges and universities. • University (Universität), providing training in musicology, usually leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A few universities provide programs for the training of music teachers for elementary and secondary schools. Many universities have attached Musicological Institutes (Musikwissenschaftliche Institute) or Seminars (Seminare). These are research establishments, usually publishing journals on musicological or related topics. Since 2003 universities in Germany have changed to the Bologna System, offering a three-year Bachelor, a two-year Master and a three-year Doctorate. CHURCH MUSIC SCHOOLS. A number of church music schools (Kirchenmusikschulen) provide specialised training for Catholic (katholische) and/or Lutheran (evangelische) musicians. Most of the larger church music schools offer studies in both Catholic and Lutheran music; some specific church music schools offer only one or the other. Their courses are of three types: i. Diploma A (Major): For those wishing to make church music their main occupation - twelve semesters. The award is made after a Staatsexamen. ii. Diploma B (Intermediate): For those wishing to work in smaller parishes - eight semesters. iii. Diploma C (Minor): For those expecting to work part- time in rural or small urban parishes - four to five semesters. The examination is conducted by the church. SCHOOLS FOR LUTHIERS. Two craft schools train craftsmen as musical instrument makers - one in Mittenwald, the other in Ludwigsburg. Many German music schools are members of the GERMAN VERBAND DEUTSCHER MUSIKSCHULEN (VDM), which itself is a member of the European Music Schools Union (EMU) with headquarters in Utrecht, Netherlands. The Centre, founded in 1997 and operating under the aegis of the German Music Council, provides information on all aspects of musical life in Germany, including music education, educational and training centres, amateur music-making, music promotion and funding, orchestras, music theatres and festivals, research and documentation centres and archives, professional associations music in the media and music economy. There is information on contemporary composers, ensembles, institutions, festivals, funding and promotion, publishers, specialised archives and libraries. The Centre publishes the Music Almanac supplying information on developments in the world of music.
