The music education program prepares for teaching music in schools but needs to be followed by the two-year Master program to gain the qualification.

The original institution, the 'Folkwang School of Music, Dance and Speech' was founded in 1927. It is now the academy of the arts in the Ruhr district, with studies in music, theatre, dance, photography, communication design, industrial design and academic studies. There are Institutes of Computer Music and Electronic Media, Popular Music, and Gregorian Chant (which organises an international summer course). The University has campuses in Essen, Duisburg, Bochum and Dortmund. The Dortmund Orchesterzentrum is a joint venture between the four Universities of Music in Cologne, Detmold, Düsseldorf and Essen. It is a collaborative education institution offering training for post-graduate students in preparation for a career as an orchestral musician. There are classes for talented students who may wish to enter the professional program. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
