This University-level school can trace its history back to 1935. It gained its current name and status in 1987. There is an opera program and an early music studio. The Lutheran church music program culminates in the State Examination A (Staatlichen A Examen). Institutes at the university include the Institut für Tonsatz, the Musicology Institute and the Institut für Musik und Medien (music and media). There is a Musikdidaktisches Museum (Museum of Music History) which includes a collection of historical woodwind and brass instruments and early keyboard instruments, books and tools on instrument building. The Dortmund Orchesterzentrum is a joint venture between the four Universities of Music in Cologne, Detmold, Düsseldorf and Essen. It is a collaborative education institution offering training for post-graduate students in preparation for a career as an orchestral musician. In a collaboration between the Hochschule Düsseldorf, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln, the Zentrum für Internationales Kunstmanagement was organised to prepare students wishing to undertake programs in arts management. Since 1976 there has been co-operation with the German Armed Forces Music Training Corps in Hilden, with every professional musician in the armed forces having a degree from the Robert Schumann School of Music. A junior program offers music training to talented students between the ages of 10 and 17. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
