Bachelor of Music. Three years. Studies include performance (classical, early music, opera), choral and orchestral conducting, musicology, composition, theory, aural skills, music pedagogy, church music, sound engineering (tonmeister, offered by the Erich Thienhaus Institute). The program in music education prepares for teaching music in schools but needs to be followed by the two-year Master program to gain the qualification.

Institution Notes:
The Hochschule, founded in 1946, has branches in Dortmund and Münster. It was formerly known as the Northwest German Music Academy. The University comprises ten music-specific buildings in and around the Palais Gardens. The College shares both an Institute of Research in Musical Talent and a Musicology Institute with the University of Paderborn. The Centre for Music and Film Informatics is a joint institution of the Hochschule and Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of applied Sciences. The Erich-Thienhaus Institut is the Hochschule’s sound recording centre. The Dortmund Orchesterzentrum is a joint venture between the four Universities of Music in Cologne, Detmold, Düsseldorf and Essen. It is a collaborative education institution offering training for post-graduate students in preparation for a career as an orchestral musician. There is a program of wellness for musicians. The Detmold Young Students' Institute is a program for highly talented school children. There is a Summer Academy for talented young musicians. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
