With the French translation of its name as 'Musique Andalouse d'Alger', this is a cultural society particularly concerned with the promotion and preservation of classical Arab-Andalusian music. It was founded in 1951 from the amalgamation of two former societies. It is an ensemble of singers and instrumentalists taking their name from the old town of El Djazair, now part of the Kasbah of the city of Algiers. With traces of its citadel, ancient mosques and Ottoman palaces, now a World Heritage Site, the district is a Mediterranean Muslim culture, a synthesis of numerous traditions.
