Institution Notes:

The Conservatory was founded in 1917. Courses are taught in Georgian. Facilities include two performance halls, one also being used for opera performances, a three-manual pipe organ and a well-appointed recording studio. The Conservatory issues several publications relating to music education, musicology and the like. The museum holds posters, programs, manuscripts, photographs, libretti and historical documents as well as Rachmaninov's piano which he left in 1912 after his concert tour. In 2003 the International Research Center for Traditional Polyphony was founded at the Conservatory. Early directors include Nikolai Nikolaev, Alexander Cherepnin and Mikhail Ipolitov-Ivanov. There is a branch in Kutaisi. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
