Specialist training for recruits to become military musicians.


Institution Notes:

The Army Music Command (Commandement des Musiques de l'Armée de Terre - COMMAT) trains military musicians for the French military. Recruits need to have completed the secondary school baccalaureat diploma in music before being accepted for audition after which they undergo three months of military training and a program of specialty training as a military musician. Full-time assignments to one of the six professional music bands of the army (COMMAT) located in Versailles, Metz, Lyon, Toulouse, Rennes and Lille are then granted. The music program comprises an orchestra, a brass quintet, a saxophone quartet, a wind quintet, and a string quartet, providing music for military ceremonies, concerts, varied ensemble groups as required, both in France and overseas. There is a collection of documents and historical recordings of military music.
