Institution Notes:

'Les Percussions de Strasbourg’ consists of a group of six professional musicians who perform all types of works for the percussion ensemble. Between them they are able to play over four hundred different percussion instruments and have a philosophy of promoting creativity in performance. They collaborate with other musicians, work with young as well as with established composers, organise workshops and are involved actively in research to find new sounds and ways of presenting works. As part of the drive to promote the love of music in general and of percussion music in particular, and arising partly from an address given by Pierre Boulez on the music education of young children, the School was established in 1981. It specialises in the teaching of solo and ensemble performance on the whole range of percussion instruments. The School organises small classes for children to allow them to experience and to experiment with sound produced by the voice, by the body and by instruments as well as to develop a feeling for rhythmic sound and movement and to develop the imagination in building soundscapes. Classes are also organised for interested adults to participate in percussion activities. The Instrumentarium of the Percussions de Strasbourg houses exhibits of unparalleled diversity. Its instrument research workshop is actively engaged in experimentation and the exploration of combinative art forms and giving rise to some completely new instruments.
