The degree may be taken with honours. A flexible double degree may be taken with music combined with a degree in a different field.

Institution Notes:

The School of Music was established in 1965 in the Canberra suburb of Manuka. Both its classical and jazz programs were amalgamated into the Australian National University and became its music wing. The School is a foremost research institution in a range of areas of Australian music. The Open School of Music offers such programs as New Orleans style, community rock, contemporary music, girls jazz and song writing, carillon performance, recording and performance for interested members of the local community. Facilities include a state-of-the-art recording studio, some fine performance spaces as well as a growing collection of keyboard instruments, including early pianos, clavichords, harpsichords, fortepianos, organs, mechanical instruments, a celeste, a gamelan and an electronic mellotron. The collection is further enlarged with sets of West African Ewe and Ashanti drums, Thai and Javanese gamelans, South Indian and East Asian percussion as well as guitars and wind instruments.
