After seventy years of existence the former Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires was closed in 2005 and its collections were transferred to the Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée in Marseille, Province. While not a teaching institution as such it offers courses in traditional music, urban popular music, iconography and organology through the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences and also through the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne). There is a large collection of French instruments, both historical and traditional, and a vast collection of recordings, videos, photographs and books. There is a possibility that the full collection of materials could be transferred back to the renovated building at 6 Mahatma Gandhi in Paris at some time after 2020.
