Licence Musicologie or Musique (= Bachelor of Arts). Three years. Studies include performance (classical, jazz), music history, ethnomusicology, aesthetics. Diplôme national supérieur professionnel de musicien (DNSPM) (= Bachelor of Music). Studies include performance (classical, jazz, early music), choral conducting, composition, electro-acoustic composition. Diplôme d’État de professeur de musique (DE). Gives the qualification to teach music in schools. May be taken concurrently with years 2 and 3 of the Bachelor.
Maîtrise (= Master of Arts). One year following the licence. In musicology, composition, acoustics.
The University can trace its history back to 1409 with the creation of the University of Provence. Following a number of name changes, in 2012 it merged with the University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University to become Aix-Marseille Université. It operates on five main campuses. An opera training program is offered. There is some co-operation with the University of the French West Indies (Université des Antilles) in Guadeloupe.
