Institution Notes:

A government-subsidised research institute, founded in 1978, and concentrating on the traditional music of the Swedish language-speaking regions of Finland. Researches have been carried out in such areas as the instruments used in various districts, recording the history of the folk musician movement since the early twentieth century, and the ballad tradition in the Swedish-speaking districts of Finland. There is a growing archive of recordings, films, photographs, ballad books, music, notes and press cuttings. The library holds the Otto Seire collection of ballad literature. The Institute issues regular publications and has released a series of recordings of traditional music; it also arranges exhibitions on relevant topics. Since it is not a teaching institution no diplomas are issued.
