Its main areas of research and teaching concentrate on the different manifestations of folk music as art and as part of social life. It is divided into two units, the teaching unit and the archives unit, with its vast collection of recordings, photographs, manuscripts, records and musical instruments - one of the largest folk tradition archives in Finland. The archives also have microfiche copies of the Helsinki University Library collection of primitive Finnish ballads (arkkiveisu) and the oldest parts of the rune archives of the Finnish Literature Society. The Department issues regular publications of its researches. Performance studies are not offered. Member of the University of the Arctic.
