The University was established in 1950 and operates on thirteen campuses, most of them in Addis Ababa. In 2010 the University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, the School of Theatre Arts and the Yared School of Music were amalgamated to form the Skunder Boghossian College of Performing and Visual Arts which offers programs in theatre arts, music, fine arts and design and incorporates the Cultural Center and Modern Art Museum. The music program aims to perpetuate and transmit the musical cultural heritage of Ethiopia, to provide excellence in music performance training to talented Ethiopian students, to train music teachers, to study musical cultures of Western music and the musics of other African nations, and to train music organisers and researchers in the area of Ethiopian music. Through its teacher education program it has been able to influence music education in schools. The Teacher’s Education System Overhaul (TESO) is a summer in-program of professional development for practising music teachers. The College offers music programs for young people and interested members of the local community. Languages of instruction are Amharic and English.
