The Academy of Arts comprises institutes of music (the Cairo National Conservatoire), artistic criticism, Arabic music, cinema, theatrical arts, ballet and folk arts. Established in 1959, the Conservatoire is also known as the ‘National Higher Institute of Music’. It aims to prepare specialised musicians in performance (all instruments and voice), composition and orchestral conducting. The Higher Institute for Arabic Music was established in 1929. It hosts two performing groups - the Um Kalthoum Band for Arab Music and the Religious Recitation Band. A number of ensemble groups have been established - symphony orchestra, folk music groups, youth orchestra, children and youth choir. As well as the professional programs the Conservatoire offers programs to children and young people. There is a branch of the Academy of Arts in the city of El-Shorouk. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
