The Bar-Ilan University was founded in 1955, and the Music Department was established in 1970. Earlier the student population comprised mostly Jewish students but by 2020 it included secular and non-Jewish students, including Arabs. All students are required to take Jewish studies as part of the curriculum. There is an Israeli Folk Music Research Centre. Facilities include a state-of-the-art professional recording studio. While there are several active performing groups at the University, individual music performance is not offered.
