Details:

Certificate in Byzantine Music. Weekly classes in Greek Orthodox chant in the Byzantine style. Studies include history of Byzantine music and Christian hymnography, theory, modes and notation of Byzantine music, music of the liturgical year.


Institution Notes:

The Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music was established in New York City in 2010. It aims to teach young men and women the Byzantine liturgical music of the Greek Orthodox Church. The School is open to all and enrols over 40 students, men, women and children ranging from 7 years to over 50 years old. The full course normally will take five years, with classes limited to a maximum of five persons. Language of instruction is Greek or English, according to the needs of the students, with most classes held on Saturdays. The School has established a professional choir (the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir) consisting of 25 young Greek-American trained Byzantine chanters.
