The Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Musique, Danse et Art Dramatique de la Réunion was founded in 1987 and is one of over 30 such institutions in France. Its headquarters are in Saint-Denis, with other teaching centres in Saint-Benoît, Saint-Paul and Saint-Pierre. The Conservatoire is a public institution offering programs in music, classical and contemporary dance and drama. A traditional Réunionese music department offers programs in music and sega song and maloya dance, as well as African music (African and Afro-Cuban percussion) and Indian music (sitar and tabla). The programs are organised in cycles: the first (preparatory) cycle, ‘Éveil musical’, lasts for four years, followed by the second cycle, also of four years, and leading into the professional programs of the third (cycle d’orientation professionnelle) and fourth (cycle d’enseignement supérieur professionnel). There are over 500 instruments available for hire to students. In addition to the four basic programs the Conservatoire offers music activities to interested members of the local community. The island of Réunion has the only professional orchestra of all overseas territories of France and also organises several choirs.
