Institution Notes:

The Musical Society of Niger was established in 1983 with the aim of stimulating an awareness of the richness of Western classical and contemporary music for Nigerians. From this grew the need for a system of music training, resulting in the creation of the MUSON School of Music in 1989. Students may enter for the examinations of the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London). Music instruction is offered to children and interested members of the local community in Lagos. The School of Music organises the MUSON Symphony Orchestra and the MUSON Choir. It receives no public funding and relies on the generous grants from the MTN Foundation, sponsorships and donations by its corporate and individual partners and supporters. MUSON is the Nigerian representative of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in UK which conducts world-wide music examinations from its headquarters in London.
