Siena Jazz was established as a non-profit cultural institution in 1977 by the City and Province of Siena and the Sienese Jazz Association. It became the 'Siena Jazz - Accademia nazionale del Jazz' Foundation in 2005, its courses being regarded as equivalent to those of a university. Situated in the Fortezza Medicea Building, facilities include state-of-the-art teaching and playing equipment, a sound archive, library and workshop, forming the 'Arrigo Polillo' National Centre for Jazz Studies', the research arm of the Foundation. The Academy organises courses for young people, and has instituted the Peter Pan Orchestra for children to introduce them to jazz styles. There are annual international summer courses in jazz. Member of the International Association of Jazz Schools. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
