Institution Notes:

The University can trace its history back to 1851. It is the oldest and largest comprehensive university in Iran. The Faculty of Fine Arts comprises departments of visual arts, music, drama, cinema, photography, architecture and urban and regional planning. The music department, founded in 1964, specialises in classical Iranian and Western music, with some emphasis on ethnomusicology. The College is an important centre for the study of Persian classical music. The university archives hold a collection of early manuscripts of music theory in the Middle Ages. The University was closed for several years in the 1970s. Languages of instruction are Farsi and English.
