Founded in 1860 as St Stephen's College, an institution for men intending to enter the theological seminary, its name was changed to Bard College in 1934 when its focus became more aligned to classical and progressive educational traditions, with some emphasis on creative and performing arts. Women were first admitted in 1944 to what had became a liberal arts college. In 2005 the Bard College Conservatory of Music was established and in 2012 the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts formally joined with Bard College to become The Longy School of Music of Bard College. Facilities include some fine performing spaces including the new László Z Bitó Conservatory Building, the Richard B Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Blum Hall and Olin Hall. In 2011 the college launched 'Take a Stand', a program supporting social change through music. The Conservatory has organised a Conductors Institute to hone the skills of practising conductors. Bard College houses the John Cage Trust archives. The Creative Centre for Film Music supports the study of film music and composition for film. A preparatory division offers music performance and composition tuition to young people between the ages of 3 and 18. Adult lessons are also available.
