The University was founded in 1919 and is the oldest university in Slovakia, the Department of Musicology following soon after, in 1921. Research areas include early music, history of jazz and popular music in Central Europe, systematic musicology, mathematical music theory, aesthetics, and history of opera. Language of instruction is Slovak, with some classes in English.
