The University of The Arts was established in 1973 with the amalgamation of the former Academies of Music, Fine Arts, Applied Arts and Theatrical Arts. There are four faculties - Music, Drama, Fine Arts and Applied Arts. The Faculty of Music is the oldest higher music institution in Serbia and has divisions of composition, conducting, voice, piano, orchestral instruments, early instruments, chamber music, jazz and popular music, musicology, ethnomusicology, theory and music education. It houses a Phono Archive Institute for the collection and classification of Serbian folk music and music by Serbian composers. There is a collection of Serbian traditional instruments as well as of instruments of other former Yugoslav republics. A sizeable collection of recordings of traditional music is held. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
