This private university was formally established in 1996 by the State and given its current name in respect of the earlier education establishment set up by the Catholic Maronite Antonine Order. The Antonine Fathers School of Music was established in 1981 and since 2006 has been elevated to a higher status, offering Bachelor and Master degrees as well as a Diploma of Advanced Studies and the Teaching Licence. There are departments of Western Art Music and Arabic Classical Music and Oriental Musical Traditions. The University operates on four campuses but music programs are only offered at the Hadath-Baabda campus. The Centre for Research on Musical Traditions issues the Journal of Musical Traditions of the Arabic and Mediterranean Worlds as well as the Journal of Sciences of Music Education (in Arabic). It has partnerships with Universities in Paris and with the Arab Academy of Music. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
