Institution Notes:

The Pontificio Instituto Ambrosiano di Musica Sacra (PIAMS), founded in 1940, is a research centre dedicated to the scientific study, transmission and promotion of the Ambrosian liturgy and of the song that is an integral part of it, as well as of the entire thesaurus of sacred music. Like the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome with which it is associated, it is authorised to confer university qualifications with canonical validity. It offers programs in Ambrosian chant, covering areas of performance (voice, piano, organ), theory, musicology and composition. Since 2009 the School of Liturgical-Musical Animators (SALM) has been annexed to the Institute. All students undergo a period of internship. The Institute issues books, music scores and audio CDs together with liturgical aids for Sunday animation. There is an extensive library of Gregorian chant.
