The Janáček Academy of Music and Theatre (Janáčkove Akademie Múzickych Umění) was founded in 1947. It is the only Czech music school permitted to award honorary doctorates. There are two faculties - music and theatre. Summer master classes focusing on the interpretation of works by Janáček, Martinu, Smetana, Dvořák, Novak, Suk and other Czech composers are held annually in the second half of July. The annual Janacek International Competition is held in early May with competitions in voice, piano and stringed instruments in three-year cycles. Language of instruction is Czech, but some of the main subjects are given in English or German. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
