Institution Notes:

The Jazz Institute is a municipal institute founded and financed by the City of Darmstadt. It is not a teaching organisation, but is a premier institution in the archiving, preservation, research and documentation of jazz and its evolution. It holds the largest public research archive on jazz in Europe. There are thousands of specialised books, photographs, posters and periodicals and more than 80,000 items of recorded music - CDs, LPs, DVDs, videos, vinyl and shellac recordings as well as tapes. Most of the printed material has been entered into Jazz-Index, a computer-based bibliography available to researchers all over the world. The institute organises exhibitions. It has instituted an oral history project on German jazz and has published a book on the development of jazz in Frankfurt. It organises a biennial conference on jazz and holds regular concerts in the cave beneath its current residence.
