The Institute, founded in 1948, is not a teaching institution, but is an information centre of contemporary music of the City of Darmstadt. It holds an annual International Summer Course for New Music in the City of Darmstadt. The Institute holds an extensive library and archive of music and music history of they 20th century, with over 40,000 scores, hundreds of book titles and some 2,000 live recordings of concerts held over the years since its foundation, as well as an extensive collection of CDs, DVDs and photographs.
