The Museum, known as MUCEM, was originally founded in 1937, and after a time spent at the Bois de Boulogne, it was relocated to Marseille in 2013. It conducts research into aspects of European and Mediterranean civilisations, including French culture both at home and in French possessions abroad. While not a teaching institution, prior to the move to Marseille it offered courses in traditional music, urban popular music, iconography and organology through the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences and also through the University Paris IV, Sorbonne. There is a large collection of French instruments, both historical and traditional, and a vast collection of recordings, videos, photographs and books.
