Institution Notes:
The Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), conceived and founded by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, opened in 1976 and is now known as the University of the Arts, offering programs in music, theatre, modern dance, ballet, visual arts and audio-visual media. After a period of decline in which the buildings lay abandoned, interest was renewed in the first decade of the 21st century in completing the structures which have since been considered for inclusion on the World Heritage list of sites.
