This Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music (CIDMUC) is not a teaching institution. It was established in 1978 and is organized under the Instituto Cubano de la Música of the Ministry of Culture, the main objective being to foster studies, research and development in Cuban and Caribbean music and to disseminate the information. There are separate departments of research, of development and of documentation and information, with supporting photographic, computer and audio/recording sections. There is some emphasis on research into ethnomusicology, psychology and sociology of popular-traditional Cuban musical culture. In 1997 the Centre published the Atlas of Cuban Traditional Musical Instruments and has been working on the Dictionary of the Spanish and Latin American Music.
