Institution Notes:
A state-funded university founded in 1940. In the Faculty of Fine Arts there are schools of theatre, plastic arts and music. The Music School can trace its history back to 1934. It offers programs through three departments - performance and conducting, theory and composition, music education. There is a centre for music research (Centro Electrónico de Investigación Musical). The School holds an Archive of Costa Rican Music and publishes the Costa Rican Musical Heritage series, bringing together sheet music, books and compact discs. A junior department provides music training from age 4 till the end of secondary schooling, and the school offers music courses to interested members of the local community.
