Institution Notes:

The Gitameit Music Centre was established in 2003. It is a non-profit community outreach centre and music school - an informal association of musicians and music lovers aiming to build understanding and co-operation between people through activities which encourage the holding of concerts, music exchanges and music study in Myanmar. The Centre encourages students to listen to and understand music genres from all over the world and also to involve themselves in other art forms such as poetry, theatre, literature and visual arts. It facilitates the participation of young Myanmar musicians in the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble organised by Mahidol University in Thailand, and also facilitates Myanmar musicians to study in Thailand. The Centre invites international artists and teachers for performances in Myanmar. There are both junior and senior choirs. Facilities include a 130-seat auditorium and six rooms for teaching practice, computer use, listening, and a small library of books and music scores. Music study is open to all and there is a sliding fee schedule with some free tuition and scholarships available. The Centre is currently involved with outreach projects to teach music to underprivileged youths in the Yangon suburbs.
